Global Muslim Conference On Unity And Economy (GMC 2013) in Malaysia

Malaysia is set to host the Global Muslim Conference On Unity And Economy (GMC 2013), a gathering of global experts, investors, bankers, educationalists, scientists and others, to boost Islamic economy.

Organised by The Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (DPMM), the two-day event will be held in Kuala Lumpur, beginning March 4.

DPMM President Datuk Syed Ali Alattas said GMC 2013 would be a platform to discuss related issues on Muslim economy and exposing business opportunity that are available for business matching.

"We hope this conference will help to increase Malaysia's trade to other Muslim countries," he told reporters after launch the GMC 2013 here Thursday.

According to Syed Ali, 20 per cent of Malaysia's total trade currently is to Muslim countries all over the world, excluding Asean.

He also noted that the reconstruction activities in Egypt, Yemen and Iraq would be the strongest sectors to benefit from the event.

Themed "Empowering Muslim Economy and Fostering Unity", the event is open to only 200 participants.

To date, a total of 75 applications had been received, of which two-thirds were from non-Muslim countries.

Workers’ Party of North Korea Kim Jong-un

First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of North Korea Kim Jong-un came out with two speeches at the party's plenary session here on Sunday. The session focused "on tasks the party faces in making a decisive turn in the process of accomplishing the Juche revolutionary course." Panglao Island Environmental Problems

By Romy Teruel One environmental and tourism issue that will keep on cropping up unless decisive actions are done is the issue of easement along beaches as prescribed by the Water Code of the Philippines.  This has cropped up before and now it is here again.    The conference that Gov. Erico B. Aumentado held with the hotel and resort owners of Panglao and Dauis last Friday is an example of laws wanting in implementation. While the laws are clear and guidelines are prescribed, willing compliance has remained a problem.  The Water Code of the Philippines prescribes a 20-meter easement from the high water mark on the beach towards inland where no permanent structure can be constructed whatsoever.  We need not send experts however to know that compliance is more in the breach than observance.  This prompts observers to ask "What happened to Bohol's thrust on eco-tourism and environmental conservation and protection?"  And this is usually followed by "They are killing...
