The frequent parties during the Christmas season can very well trigger heart attacks, according to an advisory from the Department of Health (DOH).
Statistics show that Filipinos overindulge in food and alcohol during this season while others get the stress in thinking, buying and spending for gifts to give during Christmas.
A study in the United States showed the peak of heart diseases occur during Christmas season, particularly four to six days after Christmas Day. While there are no similar studies yet in the country, the same trend is observed, according to the DOH advisory.
Instead of looking after the usual Christmas staples like lechon and ham, Filipinos should start preparing food served consisting of vegetables and fruits. Some healthy food for the holiday season would be steamed fish and various vegetable garden salad.
