by Jose Carillo: With the Philippine print media now admirably keeping a much tighter watch over their English grammar and usage, there are obviously fewer opportunities for Jose Carillo's English Forum to do instructive critiques of their grammar errors. This is why for the past several weeks, the Forum has been gradually shifting to new areas of focus in English grammar and usage improvement. It opened a Students' Sounding Board section last January to provide college and high school students with their own online forum for improving English proficiency. It expanded its "Use and Misuse" section last June 4 to more strongly encourage Forum members to discuss any aspect of English that baffles them, and to share interesting experiences about English use and misuse at work, in school, or in the mass media. Then, last June 11, it relaunched its "Pour Out Your Mind" section as "My Thoughts Exactly," which features expositions by Forum members in a more attractive format to better promote the felicitous use of English in self-expression.
These changes have definitely made the Forum's grammar lessons less dependent on the Philippine print media's misuse of English; instead, as you will see below in the Forum's offerings for this week, we now have a Forum that's more attuned to—and one that directly addresses—the English-usage problems and questions encountered from day to day by professionals, employees, teachers, students, and the general public.
