Review of The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Review of The Help by Kathryn Stockett " The Help by Kathryn Stockett is a story that made me weep as I rejoiced for each of humanity's small but steady triumphs over hate and fear. I will never forget this wonderful book." —Dorothea Benton Frank "A magical novel. Heartbreaking and oh so true, the voices of these characters, their lives and struggles will stay with you long after you reluctantly come to the end." —Robert Hicks, New York Times – bestselling author of The Widow of the South "I love The Help . Kathryn Stockett has given us glorious characters and a powerful, truth-filled story. Abilene, Minny and Skeeter, show that people from this troubled time came together despite their differences and that ordinary women can be heroic." —Jill Conner Browne, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of The Sweet Potato Queens series and resident of Jackson, MS "Set in the rural South of the 1960's, THE HELP is a startling, resonant p

Language of God: Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief by Dr. Francis Collins

Language of God: Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief by Dr. Francis Collins On a warm summer day just six months into the new millennium, humankind crossed a bridge into a momentous new era. An announcement beamed around the world, highlighted in virtually all major newspapers, trumpeted that the first draft of the human genome, our own instruction book, had been assembled. The human genome consists of all the DNA of our species, the hereditary code of life. This newly revealed text was 3 billion letters long, and written in a strange and cryptographic four-letter code. Such is the amazing complexity of the information carried within each cell of the human body, that a live reading of that code at a rate of one letter per second would take thirty-one years, even if reading continued day and night. Printing these letters out in regular font size on normal bond paper and binding them all together would result in a tower the height of the Washington Monument. For the first time on that

Dr. Francis Collins, head of the Human Genome Project

Dr. Francis Collins, head of the Human Genome Project, is one of the world's leading scientists. He works at the cutting edge of the study of DNA, the code of life. Yet he is also a man of unshakable faith in God and scripture. Dr. Collins believes that faith in God and faith in science can coexist within a person and be harmonious. In The Language of God he makes his case for God and for science. He has heard every argument against faith from scientists, and he can refute them. He has also heard the needless rejection of scientific truths by some people of faith, and he can counter that, too. He explains his own journey from atheism to faith, and then takes readers for a stunning tour of modern science to show that physics, chemistry, and biology can all fit together with belief in God and the Bible. The Language of God is essential reading for anyone who wonders about the deepest questions of faith: Why are we here? How did we get here? What does life mean? About t

Evander Holyfield will challenge Francois Botha

Evander Holyfield will challenge Francois Botha for lightly regarded WBF world heavyweight title in Uganda on Jan. 16 in his latest bid to regain credibility as a big draw in the ring. Organizers for the fight at Kampala's Nambole Stadium said Thursday that both boxers had signed contracts. They predicted a crowd of 80,000 fans and the potential of a big pay-per-view payout for the cash-strapped Holyfield, a former four-time world champion who has won only five of his last 12 contests. "I am very much looking forward to going to Uganda and I expect a tough fight against Francois Botha," Holyfield said. "I am going to win and I will cherish the WBF world title." Holyfield (42-10 with 2 draws) has not fought since losing a points decision to Nikolai Valuev a year ago. The 47-year-old American, a former world cruiser weight and heavyweight champion, believes a victory could give him a shot at a more prestigious title.    He badly needs it. Holyfield twice

Did the PAGASA goof or is El Niño postponed

By Joe Espiritu    Did the PAGASA goof or is El Niño postponed? Not that we are complaining but not everyone can be satisfied. Rice farmers, whose paddies had been cracking because of a dry spell are cheering. However, fisherfolks whose fish are drying are starting to curse. Not only them. Also their neighbors. The neighborhood is starting to stink.   St Peter, the patron saint of fishermen wanted sunshine so his devotees could dry their catch. St. Isidore de Labrador or San Isidro wanted rain for his farmers so they decided to toss a coin. But the coin they had was rendered to Cesar so they decided to let nature take her course, until they find another coin.   Anyway, the rains of the inter convergence zone is doing a last hurrah. When the perpendicular rays of the sun will pass Bohol on its journey north, the  cold north winds will be driven northward away from the rain clouds from the south. No precipitation will occur. That will be some two months from now.   February, that is n

Strong earthquake struck Haiti on Wednesday morning

A strong earthquake struck Haiti on Wednesday morning , shaking buildings and sending screaming people running into the streets only eight days after the country's capital was devastated by a previous quake. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 6.1 magnitude quake hit at 6:03 a.m. about 35 miles northwest of the capital of Port-au-Prince. It struck at a depth of 13.7 miles but was located too far inland to generate any tidal waves in the Caribbean. Wails of terror rose Wednesday from frightened survivors of the apocalyptic quake that struck eight days ago as people as people poured out of unstable buildings. It wasn't immediately possible to ascertain what additional damage the new quake may have caused. Last week's magnitude-7.0 quake killed an estimated 200,000 people in Haiti, left 250,000 injured and made 1.5 million homeless. A massive international aid effort has been launched, but is struggling with overwhelming logistical problems.
