Monetary Policy of China in 2013

By Kim Young-gyo China will implement a cautious monetary policy next year , as the country seeks to rebalance its economic structure, a Beijing scholar said Monday. Hu Xingdou, a political economist at the Beijing Institute of Technology, predicted China's newly installed leadership will seek to establish a monetary policy in that way, saying more measures to boost the country's consumption will be introduced as well. A new crop of Chinese leaders for the next decade was appointed last month, with the members of the Chinese Communist Party's Standing Committee, the most powerful decision-making organ within the only de facto political party in the country, selected. The committee is led by Xi Jinping, who will be officially named the country's president next March. China was expected to adjust the components of the economic growth largely driven by exports and investment in a bid to sustain rapid and stable growth for the rest of the coming decade. "Stab

Citibank Korea Cuts Jobs

The market share of Citibank Korea based on its total amoun

In an interview here during a Liberal Party meeting, the President said he told Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario to raise the issue with China to know whether the action is an official state policy. "Kung mapatunayan na meron talagang ganoong kautusan, hindi proposal, at talagang gagawin nila... maglo-lodge tayo ng isang diplomatic note or formal protest. And it also tells us where to go to in terms of advancing our interest," the President said. "We might accelerate and bring it before the appropriate international tribunal to finally settle the matter, or at least start the process of settling it legally and concretely," he added. Asked if he'll consider appealing to China not to exacerbate the situation, the

Saudi Arabia's example of investing oil wealth at home

Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Zamil, Chairman of Saudia Arabia's multi-industry conglomerate Zamil Group and CEO of National Chemical Carriers Ltd., said here Thursday that Gulf Arab states shall follow Saudi Arabia's example of investing oil wealth at home rather than buying assets abroad. Speaking at the three-day annual Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA), Al-Zamil said that Saudi-Arabia's conservative investment policy has saved the kingdom from the full impact of financial crisis. He urged all members of the Gulf Co- operation Council (GCC), to build up their own industries and to export "petrochemicals and pharmaceuticals, rather than barrels of oil ," said Al-Zamil. The industry tycoon added that oil was sold Thursday in Europe at world market prices of 110 U.S. dollars per barrel although it is only stored there, "but the GCC states have much higher costs and less benefits from exporting pure barrels." Unlike sovereign we

No Babies Born with HIV by 2015

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday unveiled an ambitious road map for achieving the vision of an AIDS-free generation, aiming to see globally no babies born with HIV by 2015 . Officially titled the "President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) Blueprint: Creating an AIDS-free Generation," the road map was announced by Clinton at the State Department, two days ahead of the World AIDS Day. Under the road map, the United States will increase its coverage of HIV treatment to cut the number of deaths from AIDS and boost HIV prevention, including antiretroviral drugs. U.S. President Barack Obama has set a goal of treating some 6 million people with such drugs by the end of 2013; increase the numbers of men that get circumcisions, as study showed that circumcised men were less likely than uncircumcised men to be infected through sex HIV-positive women. By the end of fiscal year 2013, PEPFAR aims to have supported such operations fo

Palestinians status at the United Nations

The UN General Assembly on Thursday voted overwhelmingly to grant an upgrade of the Palestinians status at the United Nations from "entity" to "non- member state," which would amount to the world body's implicit and symbolic recognition of the Palestinian statehood. The 193 UN member states voted 138-9, with 41 abstentions, to support a draft resolution co-sponsored by about 70 countries, including China, Algeria, Angola, Brazil, Cuba, Jordan, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Qatar, Senegal, South Africa, Tajikistan, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. Ten countries were added to the list of co- sponsors of the draft resolution. Canada, Israel and the United States voted against the draft resolution. After Vuk Jeremic, the president of the 67th session of the General Assembly, announced the result of the vote, the applause came from the hall of the General Assembly. Many ambassadors and diplomats came to shake hands with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to express

U.S. economic data reacts to crude oil price

Crude prices rose on Thursday as U.S. economic data came in positive and continuing unrest in the Middle East caused supplies fears. Market sentiment was boosted after the Commerce Department said U.S. gross domestic product expanded at a 2.7 percent annual rate, much faster than 2.0 percent it estimated last month. It was the quickest quarterly growth rate since the fourth quarter of 2011, helped by faster inventory accumulation and export growth, which offset weak consumer spending and a drop in business investment. Meanwhile, a report from the Labor Department added to the upbeat tone. The report showed U.S. initial jobless claims declined 23,000 in the week ended Nov. 24 to 393,000, as effect of Hurricane Sandy faded. Pending home sales climbed 5.2 percent in October, surging to its highest level in more than five years, according to the National Association of Realtors. Traders were closely watching the situation in the Middle East, in particular the viole

Labor Party Wins in Israel Election

The center-left Labor Party , which is expected to be the second largest in Israel's next Knesset (parliament), has elected Friday new blood into its lines prior to the Jan. 22 elections. Although the second and third places in the list, following Chairwoman Shelly Yachimovich, went to political veterans Yitzhak Herzog and Amir Peretz, many in the party's top 20 are new faces that only joined the party in recent weeks. Both Yachimovich and Peretz, long-time rivals, had their favorites which they pushed onto the list. Following the results, Yachimovich said at the party's headquarters that she "couldn't have dreamed of a better list." One of the biggest surprises is Merav Michaeli, a feminist columnist who was supported by Peretz and got the fifth spot at the party's list. Herzog told the Walla news website that he is very happy about the list which "accurately reflects the interaction between the veteran politicians and the newcomers

UN Recognizes Palestinian Authority

The UN General Assembly recognized on Thursday the Palestinian Authority (PA) as a non-member observer state. The Palestinian bid, submitted by President Mahmoud Abbas, was approved by 138 UN members, while nine voted against it and 41 abstained from voting. The move amounts to an implicit recognition of the Palestinian statehood and increases PA's chances of joining other UN bodies. It also allows the Palestinian Authority to challenge the continuing construction of Israeli settlements on the occupied Palestinian land in the International Criminal Court. Abbas urged the US General Assembly before the historic vote "to issue the birth certificate of Palestine." He also reiterated that the Palestinians would continue their efforts to achieve a fully-recognized statehood. Abbas submitted Palestine's official application for recognition as an independent state in the UN in September 2011. That bid was blocked by a US veto in the Security Council.

New Deadly AIDS Virus Worldwide

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday unveiled a blueprint for ending the deadly AIDS virus worldwide , a two-pronged plan that requires increased prevention efforts and greater access to treatment she said would someday lead to "an AIDS-free generation." "We can reach a point where virtually no children are born with the virus, and as these children become teenagers and adults, they are at a far lower risk of becoming infected than they are today," Clinton said at a press conference to announce the plan. "And if they do acquire HIV, they have access to treatment that helps prevent them from not only developing AIDS, but from passing the virus on to others," she added. The blueprint was developed at Clinton's request by the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a US government initiative launched under former President George W. Bush to help save the lives of HIV and AIDS victims around the world. The pla

Kasibulan Grassroots Courses and Festivals (GCF)

There are now a total of 115 Kasibulan Grassroots Courses and Festivals (GCF) conducted successfully by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) in the country today. "By the end of October, we should have completed 198 festivals with the support of our 33 Provincial Football Associations (PFA)," said Aquilino Pastoral III of the PFF national grassroots development. He said there are now currently 5,286 plus teacher- coaches, who just earned their grassroots badge and 33,788 new football players identified from ages 6 to 12 years old including girls. The remaining months of the year is allotted to Project 2019 of the PFF where regional, national and international competition will be conducted. Pastoral said Project 2019 is about players who are currently playing in the Kasibulan program, aimed at preparing young boys to play football in the world championship in 2019. PFF recently finished the evaluation of the Grassroots Development Program(GDP) of Kasibulan progra

Russia GDP Growth Rate

The World Bank has lowered its forecast for Russia's 2012 GDP growth to 3.5 percent from the previously projected 3.8 percent, the bank reported Monday. The economic growth forecast for 2013 was also downgraded from 4.2 percent to 3.6 percent. The World Bank's adjusted GDP growth outlook for 2012 coincided with the Russian government's forecast, but proved to be more pessimistic for 2013 than the 3.7 percent projected by the Russian Economic Development Ministry. In 2011, the Russian economy grew by 4.3 percent. "Despite a modest rise in oil prices, we project growth in Russia to decline from 4.3 percent in 2011 to 3.5 percent in 2012, and stay at 3.6 percent in 2013. The revision reflects the poor agricultural harvest and a weaker-than-expected global environment," the report said.

Detonators in Hebei, China

The death toll has risen to eight after Saturday's explosion triggered by detonators illegally manufactured and stored at a residential building in north China's Hebei Province, local authorities said Monday. Five more bodies were retrieved while rescuers were clearing the debris in the city of Baoding, the city government said in a statement late Monday. Another 27 people are still under treatment in hospital, it added. Two suspects, a 38-year-old man surnamed Ge and his 42-year-old girlfriend, turned themselves in to police Monday noon in the eastern province of Anhui. Ge and two relatives started producing detonators in 2009. Due to poor sales, the three stored unsold detonators at a house of the six-storey building in Dongwuyao Village. The explosion that occurred Saturday afternoon toppled part of the building and also shattered the glass windows of buildings 200 meters away.

Cost of whole trip to Mecca

The first group of 1,523 Togolese Muslim pilgrims will leave the capital Lome Tuesday for Mecca, according the Togolese Muslim Union. In July, the Togolese National Commission for Hajj took measures to ensure proper organization of the visits to avert the difficult situation faced last year by Togolese pilgrims. The whole trip to Mecca for each of the pilgrims has been fixed at a cost of 1.8 million FCFA (3,600 U. S. dollars) inclusive of accommodation for one month and shopping in Mecca. In 2011, close to 1,500 Togolese pilgrims went to Mecca. However, 400 of those pilgrims found themselves in a difficult situation before returning to their country. To improve the organization of pilgrimage for the Togolese Muslims, the Muslim authorities decided that the measures to be taken will include the construction of a Hajj house at a cost of 2. 5 billion FCFA (5 million dollars).

Developing Countries in East Asia and Pacific region

World Bank Monday cut its forecast for the growth rate of the developing countries in the East Asia and Pacific region . The GDP growth for the EAP in 2012 is now projected to be 7.2 percent, a full percentage point down from 8.2 percent last year and also slower than their earlier assessment of 7.6 percent in this May. "This is the slowest growth rate in the Asia Pacific region since 2001. It's even slower than the peak of the financial crisis in 2009," Bert Hofman, the Chief Economist of EAP region of WB said during the press release here. According to the report, tensions on international financial markets have eased in recent months, following developments in Euro area and central bank action in Europe, the United States and Japan. However, their import demands from the EAP region still stay weak due to lackluster recovery in the U.S. and the recession in eurozone. "But uncertainties remain, and should conditions in Europe deteriorate sharply, no develo

Pruning, spraying, and fertilization of Coconut

The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) on Monday vows to continue enforcing measures to wipe out small scale insect infestation among the country's coconut trees. PCA reported positive development in its mitigating measures to combat coconut scale insect infestation affecting nine municipalities in Batangas. In a statement, Euclides Forbes, PCA administrator, said that coconut farmers attested to the effectivity of the measures being undertaken – including pruning, spraying, and fertilization . Forbes said that they had already spent over P5 million to treat infected trees, adding that they would continue to provide technical and financial support to totally eradicate the infestation. "Technical staff from LGU's (local government units) and farmers observed that after leaf pruning, coconut trees fully recovered when salt is applied as fertilizer," Forbes said. As of October 2012, there were already 252,967 leaves pruned in the affected municipaliti

Singapore Stock Market Update

Singapore shares closed 1 percent lower Monday, weighed down by concerns about the outlook for the global economy and corporate earnings despite better-than- expected U.S. jobs numbers at the end of last week. An unexpected drop in the U.S. unemployment rate to below 8 percent was overshadowed by concerns about the earnings season -- which kicks off with Alcoa Incorporated Tuesday. SIAS Research said "the Straits Times Index could be flattish, with fluctuations of about 0.5 percent up or down, and we could see some profit-taking in the week" amid choppy trade. But the research house also added "this could be a good buying opportunity for those who have been sitting on the sidelines... The small- and mid-capitalization and the cyclical could be coming back into play. " NRA Capital said "the Straits Times Index could be range-bound this week, between the 2,900 points and 3,100 points levels, although the bias is toward the downside after the recent rally,&q

Looking forward to my after school program

When my mom finally decided to take that plum posting as a Divisional Head, I knew I was in trouble. Her office hours stretched way beyond my  school hours. And anyway, I was privy to the many discussions my parents  had about 'Honey, what do we do with the kids?' Well, finally they struck  gold - an educational after school program. Won't that be just grand? Kids  are learning new things while parents are happily minting greenbacks! And so, we went directly to another class after our school. The brochure  said that they would be 'using fun activities and innovative teaching  methods to fill the gap in your child's understanding'. I suppose they  meant that the teacher would write down the homework and we were to copy  it. At least, this is what happened most of the time. Of course, we didn't  tell our parents. How would that help? They'd simply get smart and shift us to a class that would actually make us solve our homework. I hated the classes

Children look for different things in an after-school program

There is often a trap in the words 'after school activities'. One may  easily believe that since these activities are after school, they are not  of much importance. But, one couldn't be more wrong. Research suggests  that children pick up some of their most important skills from after  school programs. That is why children who do not participate in any extra  curricular activities are generally slow and less vibrant. The learning environment that one fosters in after school activities must  be as disciplined and as functional as that found in the school. This is  especially true of educational after school programs. This is the best  place to teach the child important skills like time-management and goal  setting. Time-management is a vital skill, but it is not achieved easily.  Children need to feel the discipline that is needed to finish a task and  the happiness of finishing the allotted work in a specific time frame.  Children look for different things in an a

What marks a successful after school program?

Successful after school programs What marks a successful after school program? What are the things that you should look for when enrolling your child into one such program? Other  than the obvious advantage of learning something new, successful programs  incorporate many things that help the development of the child .  Development of social skills is one of the more important objectives of a  good after school program. In a recent survey, parents indicated that  while they do want their children to respect others, they also wanted them  to imbibe skills like getting along with other children and getting used  to children outside the immediate circle of friends. Many children find it  difficult to make new friends and get along with people outside their  group.  Good after school programs place special emphasis on security and safety.  They keep children out of trouble and keep them safe. A good after school  program should be fun, especially when the children are young. If the

How to keep children motivated and safe

School based after-school programs In an effort to keep children motivated and safe , the U.S. Government sets aside a good amount of fund for financing after school programs every  year. A report by the U.S. Department of Education and Justice points out  that after school programs are very effective and is in the interests of  the society as a whole. Interestingly, it was found that Americans liked  providing school-based after school-programs in their community. Other than safety, boredom and loneliness, the poor performance of many  students also led to the need for after-school programs that are based on  the school curriculum. Children coming from low-income families were found  to lag behind in reading and grammar after a long break in the summer.  Statistics prove that if school-going children are left unsupervised after  their school, the chances of poor grades and drop out are considerably  higher. The funds provided by the Government will allow rural and  inner-ci

Balanced Development of a Child

After school programs can be divided into 3 broad categories: academic, recreational and social. Balanced development takes place when there is  compatibility between the physical, mental as well as the educational  achievements of the child. As the name suggests recreational after school  programs are based on a sport or recreation. Some of the more common  physical activities include football, swimming and basketball. Some clubs  offer programs like gymnastics, trekking and hiking. In this case,  youngsters are often given a short class in first-aid class also. Recreational after school programs offer children an opportunity to let  off some steam and to destress themselves. The closed classroom atmosphere  and a day full of textbooks and writing cause the child to repress his  natural enthusiasm. He curbs his energy when he is required to sit quietly  in class and learn. Physical activity is an all-time low during such  times. This physical lethargy and inaction is countermand

Make a child aware of his responsibilities as an individual and as a citizen

With the growing interest in after school programs shown by the Government as well as parents, new and hitherto unheard of programs are being  explored. In an attempt to make a child aware of his responsibilities as  an individual and as a citizen , these after school programs make use of a  child's natural curiosity and his irrepressible energy. Investigative Skills: In some schools in Kernersville, children are developing their  investigative skills. Children meet with adults who introduce them to the  details of fake non-violent crimes. They take notes, visit the scene and  gather information. Students learn to listen to alibis, collect  fingerprints and gather any other pieces of evidence. According to the  principal, these activities challenge her students' problem solving  skills. Children learn to think critically and to form informed judgments.  Fisheries and sciences: In North Carolina, children who are interested get a chance to win a  scholarship through thei

Reasons why after school programs have become so popular

Potentials of after school programs With children becoming the primary focus of society, ways and means to  ensure their safety and development are being researched. The Government  too has pooled in to make a success of such programs. Here are some of the  reasons why after school programs have become so popular : 1) Preventing Juvenile Delinquency, crime and violent victimization: About 10% of juvenile crimes happen between 3 P.M. - 4 P.M. Children need  to be kept safe and out of trouble at such times 2) Preventing alcohol, drug and tobacco use. Risk-taking behavior that seeks to establish superiority in a clan is  mostly seen in 'latchkey' children. Children in their pre-teens, if they  have a meaningful relationship with a mentor, are less likely to indulge  in these kinds of destructive behavior 3) Decreases appetite for Television: An average child watches about 23 hours of TV per week. When enrolled for  some activity, the child utilizes his mental and physical

Benefits of After-school Activities

When children are literally up to their gills with the learning and sport activities in school, it may seem superfluous to enroll them for after  school activities. In spite of this, after school programs are sprouting  up in large numbers and most of these are booked full. This shows that  there is a real need for after school activities. The unavailability of parental supervision is the leading cause for the  surge in after school programs. It is seen that many children spend about  20-25 hours a week unsupervised and alone at home. And as the saying  goes, "An idle mind is a devil's workshop". Children who are left alone  to contend with too much free time invariably fall into the wrong  company. Drug abuse, alcohol, tobacco and crime come knocking at their  doors sooner rather than later. Parents enroll children to various after  school programs to keep them occupied in a productive manner. This way,  the kids are free to enjoy themselves in a supervised activ

God is NOT Dead, Atheists Are Wrong

by Fr Roy Cimagala Not only not dead. Nor is he simply alive and kicking. He is actually intervening in our lives every step and moment of the way. This is the fundamental truth we need to disinter from the graveyard of our memory. He is at the very core of our being. He is in everything that exists around us. As St. Augustine once said, while to know where he is may be difficult, it is even more difficult to know where he is not. He is in the air, in the light, in the darkness, and both outside and inside us. He is everywhere! While he is infinitely supernatural to us, a hard reality worsened by our human condition weakened and damaged by sin, there is always in us a flicker of a divine longing, precisely because a link vitally exists between Creator and a creature made in his image and likeness and adopted as a child of his. No matter how broken that vital link may be, we can still manage to see glimpses of God's presence and power, his wisdom, his goodness and providence in the
